5.0 out of 5 stars Solid fun with a great roster, January 4, 2012

Despite what you (and me) may or may not think about Capcom's "double dipping" by releasing this so soon after the first MvC3, I'll just stick to how the game actually plays. Now there's a thought.

This is a fantastic fighting game with a solid engine. On the surface, it appears to be rather "mashy" and "noob friendly" with things like X-Factor and combos that deal 70% damage. However, there is still a lot here for the fighting game vets to master. Make no mistake, button mashing in this game will get you slaughtered by an experienced player who has carefully developed his team and tactics.

The roster is wildly original. There are many characters who I would never really expect to see in a fighting game like this in the first place. MODOK comes to mind...along with the return of Shuma-Gorath. In my opinion, this is great that Capcom decided to travel down the lesser known path. Heck, if it were up to the fans/players, I wouldn't be surprised if these games had... Read more

Even though it hasn't been that long since Capcom released Marvel VS Capcom 3, here we are already with Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3; an update that gives us a handful of new fighters, new modes, and a more balanced fighting engine to boot. Essentially what Super Street Fighter IV is to Street Fighter IV, UMvC3 throws in some additional fighters like Ghost Rider, Phoenix Wright, Frank West, Nemesis, Doctor Strange, Nova, and more besides (plus the two downloadable content characters, Shuma Gorath and Jill Valentine). There's also the ability to play as Galactus in Arcade mode, some new special moves, backgrounds, and extras. The real star here besides the new fighter additions is that there have been some slight revamps to the fighting engine. Things just feel and play more balanced than they did the last time around (i.e., no more getting slaughtered everytime Phoenix turns into "Dark" Phoenix), even though the option between "Simple" and "Normal" controls still feels overly... One of my favorite fighting games of all time is Marvel vs Capcom 2. I grew up playing it on the Dreamcast, spending hours trying out all of the characters and watching in wonder at its (at the time) incredibly smooth and flashy graphics. So I went in to this game with high expectations, doubting whether or not it could match my memories of its predecessor. This game lived not only lived up to those expectations, it blew me out of the water.

Graphics: Amazing! Everything has a flashy, comic-book stylization which I've never seen in a game before. Everything is smooth, the colors are rich, and the effects really catch my eye. The Asgard stage at night is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen in a fighting game. The comic-book style of the characters kind of leaves them without as much detail as you would see in a game like Tekken 6 or Virtua Fighter 5, but this game was never trying to go for photorealism. They fit well with the whole graphical style.

Sound: I... Read more
